Venasque
3 km from Beaucet, 7 km from Blauvac, Mazan, 8 km from Fontaine de Vaucluse, 9 km from Méthamis, Mormoiron, 10 km from Pernes les Fontaines, 11 km from Gordes, Murs, 12 km from Cabrières d'Avignon Between Carpentras and Gordes, close to the Mont-Ventoux and at the gateway to the Luberon, Venasque is a delightful small village perched atop a sheer rock face. During the Middle Ages it was protected by impressive fortifications, and nowadays you can still see three of its towers and a fortified door. Venasque, officially ranked amongst France's most beautiful villages, looks out over the valley of La Nesque and the plain of Carpentras. |

What to see, what to visit: the thirteenth century parochial church of Notre-Dame, the remains of the ancient monastery of the Chartreux), the Romanesque chapel of Saint-Siffrein, the twelfth century Romanesque defence tower of Le Pinet; the remains of the eighteenth century wall of La Peste; beautiful fourteenth and eighteenth century town houses; the remains of the town's ramparts, with one part of them Roman; two porches flanked by three towers known as ‘the Saracen Towers’ (tours sarrazines) - one of these towers is 18m high; bories and dry stone walls: there is a total of 240 bories on the commune. |
